Lite-On Award, the largest industrial design awards among the Chinese Society, announced the list of finalists today. Over 2000 designers from around the world joined this competition, hitting record high. After two days of deliberations, 23 contestants from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan and USA granted admissions to the final selection round.
The number of contestants from Taiwan showed rapid growth this year. There were also more entries this year from Singapore, Europe and USA. Background of the contestants also appeared to be very diverse – students of design, art and mechanism, professionals from world-known companies, architects and soldiers.
Many amazing and brilliant entries were submitted to the competition this year. From small designs to make our daily life better and greener to big designs which can totally change our way of living, we saw designers making their best efforts to deliver brighter ideas for greener future.
Green is Gold
The theme of 2009 Lite-On Award is “Green Miracle: Brighter Ideas for a Greener Future.” Lite-On Technology foresaw the trend of green technology. Through the theme of 2009 Lite-On Award, young designers shall discover the real meaning of green design and try to integrate it with digital devices during the design process. Not only did we expect our contestants to think humanly, but we also wished them to be eco-friendly. Five judges of our preliminary selection included Andreas Gursch, the director of The Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency (EPEA), Royce Hong, CEO + Big Head of Design of IPEVO, and Anthony Soames, the design director of Subkarma International Associates Co.,Ltd. We also invited David Wang, the creative Supervisor from bod design and Corina Zuberbuhler, the branch manager of Process Taiwan. As one of judges Corina Zuberbuhler says, “Through the selection, I see how designers realizing the importance of green design. They try to find out where in our life they could make changes to. It’s a great start and it is good to see everyone doing their best to reduce water and electricity usage as well us converting energy and storing solar power.” Majority of the entries were consumer electronic products, followed by computer related products. Public infrastructures such as bus stands, garbage bins, traffic signals, street lights and etc. were also seen during 2009 Lite-On Award. This showed that green technology design can be everywhere and significant. Andreas Gursch says, “Simple is the best, green design thinks from the most essential. ‘Cradle to cradle’ is what we are seeking for. Designers need to refine their ideas to improve the manufacturing process of IT, 3C product. I believe as long as the designer and manufacturer think greener, and that Taiwan, as one of the IT locations all around the world, can really change the world. Special Award emphasizes on Market Feasibility and Green material application This year, we gladly invited Bayer MaterialScience, a company that focuses on innovations and development in values, as one of our Special Award’s judges. Their participation enriched the award brought in different aspects. 10 entries were selected by the judges from Lite-On Tech. Corp and Bayer under the condition of creativity, technical Feasibility and the materials. Among the winners, 3 of them will be made into mock-ups under the supervision of Bayer MaterialScience. It is expected that through the green material training, the designers can get a clearer idea of what green design is. Over the past 9 years, Lite-On has been promoting and encouraging all the designers to think forward and always taking the lead of future design. We are joyful to have received many brighter ideas globally. Along with their amazing ideas, we hope to see artworks that can make our life better and greener.
