AI Literacy Education

"Children now ask ChatGPT about everything. They do not look up or think about the information themselves anymore. If they are given incorrect information, they will just go with it."

This is a real concern in many learning sites and families.

Research shows that more than 70% of elementary school students in Taiwan have used AI and spend an average of 35 hours per week on social media. Age 9 to 15 is a critical and sensitive period for cultural learning in adolescents. The LITEON Cultural Foundation hopes to assist parents and educators in guiding students to develop the ability to discern information and think independently during this limited golden window for learning. We believe that establishing the correct concepts of "AI literacy" is an important issue for the tech-filled island of Taiwan.

The "AI Literacy Promotion Program" is planned to be implemented in one-third of schools in Taiwan within three years, reaching 300,000 elementary and junior high school students and more than half of school students in remote areas. Through the program, we hope to bridge the various digital gaps:

  • AI literacy gap: While developing hardware resources and end applications, the key to shaping the critical thinking of future students and talents is AI literacy education.
  • Generational development gap: At present, there are no AI literacy elements in the standard curriculum for elementary and junior high schools. The government and industry’s AI-related education resources are concentrated in higher education and research, and relevant resources are missing from basic education.
  • Urban-rural and wealth gaps: The disparity between "knowing and identifying AI capabilities" among urban and rural populations and different socioeconomic groups has further expanded the gap between students.

Children of the AI era are growing up quickly on the shoulders of AI. The LITEON Cultural Foundation hopes to help teachers and students learn the right AI skills through the "AI Literacy Promotion Program" to become leaders in the digital era together.
