The Eighth Annual Lite-On Awards
A day of digital life technology that hel to save energy, reduce carbon emission and raise social awareness.

The Eighth Annual Lite-On Awards, one of the largest industrial design awards for the global Chinese community, held its award ceremony at the Lite-on Building today. Over 1,600 works from around the world joined this competition in the hope of winning the Gold Award of NT$350,000. To inspire all participants to think broadly and outside the box, the International Group was added to the competition for the first time this year. The main theme of this award is "A day in a Digital Life", to encourage designs that use digital technologies to further improve the quality of our daily life. In this vein, all winning teams surprised our world renowned judges with amazing creations that not only demonstrated an understanding of the theme but also showed the beauty of art. Our participants designed products for convenience as well as for saving the environment. In addition, many products could be used for elder care as well. The concepts our participants had in mind are in line with world trends. There was the possibility for mass production and a promising future for many of these products.

"A digital life is the future. Ever since the first Lite-On Awards in 2001, Lite-On has taken the lead by thinking in a wider sense. We proactively observe the industry and set our theme each year. By doing so, we hope to stimulate the imagination of young designers and to discover new trends and fresh ideas. Thus, we started to accept entries from outside of the Chinese community this year and have since received products from over 28 different areas including Europe and America. The Lite-On Award has become one of the most important global industrial design competitions among all designers by providing opportunities for talent to show the world their passion to produce designs for a better world," said Lite-On Group CEO David HH Lin during the ceremony.

Chen Chao-yi, Director-General of the Industrial Development Bureau, MOEA, a supervising body of the Lite-On Awards said at the ceremony that "Over the past 8 years, Lite-On has been promoting and encouraging all designers in the field through this award. As one of the leaders in the IT industry, Lite-On sets a good example for others to follow. This event offers a platform for creatives to exchange their opinions and discover many talented designers with great potential. I am pleased to see Lite-On Technology’s success in taking action to connect the Taiwan and Chinese community to the Global Village."

Recognizing the importance of energy saving, carbon reduction and caring for the community, all finalists integrated digital technologies and design in harmony, which is a trend in the design of IT products. The challenge for the winners was how to make the designs more user-friendly and how to upgrade our quality of life. A total of 10 designs won prizes including the Gold Award, which went to "Housekeep" by Yen-Ting Kuo Ming-Xian Sun and I-Pei Chang; two Silver Awards which went to "Embossing Braille Printer" presented by Guang-shen Guo and Danni Luo and "Mirror Talk", designed by Le Li, Long Li, Xiaoming Yang, Bing Zhang and Xiang Fei Ran. Three Bronze Awards went to "Compose" by Xi Ouyang, Bo Li, Binbin He and Li Zeng, "LED Cellphone" by Tao Ma, Meng Yue and Jenny Pan; "Iradar" by Zhe Chen.

In addition, the top three winners of the "Lite-On Special Award", voted on by all Lite-On employees based on the criteria of ease of production and marketability, are "Bath Safeguard" by Kai Yi Chen and Chia Yuan Liu; "Freshnessmeter" (鮮度計) by Yuan Yuan Lee and "Power Outage Label" (斷電標籤) by Tusng-yu Liu, Chun-Ping Cheng and Fang-Yu Kuo.
